Power of 10 Computer Literacy for beginners

An exciting pilot program launched by SCE in September 2017. It was started as a means of exposing children to basic computer literacy skills. The program was certainly a way to use a collaborative concept of 3 organisations who  wish to impact the lives of those living in our community.

SCE provided the beneficiaries from Slovo Park informal settlement. This included collection and drop off once week, a meal snack and general support and structure for the program. FWC, our home base office in Hursthill and collaborative partner, provided the venue in their computer lab attached to their training and development centre. University of Johannesburg (UJ) provided the volunteer students who assisted with tutoring, through the faculty of Management and Community Engagement. This presented some challenges along the way with students being involved in exams but our own team was able continue tutoring kids to complete the 3 month program.

The program culminated in children being able to design their own invitations using power point, under the guidance of Debbie, to end off the year with a special closing Christmas party at a surprise sponsored venue. Great fun was had by all. We look forward to continuing this program in 2018 with an intermediary course for the same group of children.

A big Thank you to Pastor Audrey Jacobs and Valencia Jacobs from use of the lab at FWC and Mr Lucas Khoza from the School of Information Systems at UJ for enabling this program.
